Sweet Rice Porridge Recipe

Sweet rice porridge, also known as sweet rice pudding or sweet rice congee, is a delicious and comforting dessert that is popular in many Asian countries. Here’s a simple recipe for making sweet rice porridge:


  • 1 cup sweet rice (also known as glutinous rice)
  • 6 cups water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 can coconut milk (13.5 oz)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Optional toppings: sliced mango, toasted sesame seeds, chopped nuts


  1. Rinse the sweet rice in a fine-mesh strainer until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours.
  2. Drain the rice and transfer it to a large pot. Add 6 cups of water and bring to a boil over high heat.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the rice simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes or until the rice is soft and the porridge is thick and creamy.
  4. Add the sugar, coconut milk, and salt to the pot and stir well to combine. Let the porridge simmer for another 10-15 minutes until it thickens and becomes creamy.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat and let the porridge cool for a few minutes before serving. You can serve it warm or chilled, and top it with sliced mango, toasted sesame seeds, or chopped nuts if desired.
