No More Dull, Soggy Peas: My Easy Method for Cooking Frozen Peas to Perfection

Whenever pea season rolled around, my Nani had just one major worry on her mind: stocking up on as many fresh peas as possible from the market to freeze them. Every other day, heaps of fresh pea pods would arrive at our house, and Nani would settle comfortably in front of the TV, watching Doraemon or her favorite shows while spending hours shelling them. She would gather the vibrant green peas into a large bowl, wash them thoroughly, blanch them briefly in hot water, drain them well, and pack them neatly into ziplock plastic bags to store in the freezer. Today, long after the pea season has passed, my freezer is still stocked with fresh peas all thanks to Nani’s foresight and dedication—and in today’s blog post, I am sharing the best way to cook those frozen peas to perfection.

Method 1: Stovetop Simmer (Best for Flavor)

  1. Bring Water to a Boil: In a small saucepan, bring $1$ cup of water to a boil over medium-high heat.

  2. Add Peas: Add $2$ cups of frozen peas directly from the freezer. No thawing needed.

  3. Simmer Briefly: Cook for $2$ to $3$ minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peas are tender and bright green.

  4. Drain & Season: Drain completely. Toss with $1$ tablespoon of butter or olive oil, a pinch of salt, freshly ground black pepper, and optional chopped mint or lemon juice.

Method 2: Microwave (Fastest)

  1. Combine: Place $2$ cups of frozen peas into a microwave-safe bowl and add $1$ to $2$ tablespoons of water.

  2. Cover: Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe plate or damp paper towel.

  3. Heat: Microwave on HIGH for $2$ to $3$ minutes.

  4. Rest & Season: Stir halfway through. Carefully drain any excess water, then season to taste.

Method 3: Pan-Sautéing (Best Texture & Aromatics)

  1. Heat the Pan: Melt $1$ tablespoon of butter or heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic or diced shallots if desired, sautéing for $1$ minute.

  2. Add Frozen Peas: Stir in $2$ cups of frozen peas.

  3. Sauté: Cook for $3$ to $4$ minutes, stirring frequently, until heated through and well-coated. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.
