I was standing in the kitchen with my sister, Zoya. Today, Zoya was making something very special—minced meatball curry (Qeema balls). She was cooking a delicious gravy and reading the recipe from a cookbook at the same time.
Suddenly, Zoya turned to me and asked, “Fozia! Tell me quickly, how much is one-eighth (1/8) of a cup?” The cookbook said to add 1/8 cup of yogurt into the gravy.
To be honest, I didn’t know either. I told Zoya, “Just take a cup and eyeball it; add about 1/8 cup.”
Zoya still couldn’t figure it out. She searched for a measuring cup but only found a large mug, which definitely couldn’t be called a standard cup.
Then Zoya said, “Oh no! If I measure with this mug, everything will be ruined. Let’s just use a tablespoon for the measurement.” But then we realized we didn’t know how many tablespoons make up 1/8 of a cup.
“Wait, let me call Granny! She’ll know for sure,” I told Zoya. I called Granny, and she gave us the answer in a heartbeat!
Zoya then took a tablespoon (the large dining spoon) and began the measurement. She carefully added 2 tablespoons of yogurt into the gravy because Granny had told us that 1/8 cup is exactly two large tablespoons.
When the meatballs and gravy were finally ready, the taste was so incredible that everyone was licking their fingers! Because of that perfect measurement, our dish became everyone’s absolute favorite.
