As a food blogger whose daily life revolves around traditional Pakistani cooking, my mind immediately jumped to my karahi, spices, and stovetop the moment I saw the word ‘Cook.’ I thought to myself, ‘Oh wow, this must be a new cooking technique or recipe secret!’
I genuinely expected it to be a culinary tip—something akin to my grandmother’s traditional wisdom of letting a clay pot simmer on low heat so the flavors can truly develop: ‘Let it cook!
However, when I looked up its actual meaning, I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.
It turns out it had absolutely nothing to do with food, spices, or the kitchen! It’s actually a modern internet slang term that means: ‘Let someone do their thing without interruption, and watch them work their magic!’
Whether someone is tackling a challenging task, showcasing a unique talent, or trying something out of the box, people say: ‘Let them cook!’ (Meaning: let them be, they’re onto something great!)
It amused me how those of us who live and breathe food tend to trace every word back to the kitchen. But honestly, once I understood the context, I grew quite fond of the expression.
After all, isn’t that true for both cooking and life? When you’re pouring your heart into a new recipe or stepping out of your comfort zone, you need a little patience and space to do your thing.
Give it time, and let people show what they’re capable of… So yeah, let them cook!
